Do people actually use outdoor gyms?

Based on the available data, and based on anecdotal evidence and feedback from our customers, the answer is a resounding yes! But it’s a fair question to ask.

Outdoor gyms are becoming increasingly popular and at a rough estimate there are over 500 outdoor gyms across Ireland today. Outdoor gyms are usually located in public parks or other public areas, which makes them accessible to a wider range of people than a typical indoor gym.

Outdoor gyms can be used by people of all fitness levels, and many people find them to be a more enjoyable and engaging way to work out compared to indoor gyms. Additionally, outdoor gyms are usually free to use, making them a great option for people who may not be able to afford a gym membership to an indoor gym.

Studies demonstrating the popularity of outdoor gyms.

There have been many studies that have shown that outdoor gyms play a key role in local communities. These studies indicate that usage is high, with many benefits provided to the user as well as the local community.

Here are a few examples of studies around outdoor gyms:

  • A study published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health found that outdoor fitness equipment in public parks was associated with increased physical activity among adults. The study surveyed park users in four cities across the United States and found that those who used the outdoor fitness equipment were more likely to meet recommended physical activity levels than those who did not use the equipment.
  • A 2021 survey conducted by RunRepeat found that 64% of Americans preferred outdoor workouts to indoor workouts, and 56% said they had used an outdoor gym in the past year.
  • A survey conducted by the outdoor fitness equipment manufacturer Greenfields Outdoor Fitness found that 73% of adults in the United States would be more likely to exercise in a park if outdoor fitness equipment was available.
  • The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has reported an increase in the number of outdoor fitness areas in public parks in recent years. In a 2019 survey of park and recreation agencies in the United States, the NRPA found that 87% of agencies had outdoor fitness equipment or areas, up from 70% in 2013.

The studies and data suggest that outdoor gyms are indeed being used by many people and are becoming an increasingly popular option for exercise.

They are the perfect way to enhance local amenities and improve quality of life for people living in the locality.
